Audition Information for the 2023 Script Development Festival

TSGP is seeking actors to fill roles in 3 plays that will be part of our 2023 Script Development Festival. Auditions will be entirely based on video submissions and availability. Callbacks will be held on an as-needed basis.

Actors with identities that have been historically underrepresented are particularly encouraged to audition.

Key production dates and components:

  • Participate in one Zoom-based readthrough of the script 2-4 weeks prior to the week of the workshop rehearsals.

  • Participate in a one week workshop including 4 evenings of rehearsal or up to 12 hours of rehearsal the week of the workshop performance led by a Seattle-based director

  • A final table-reading performance with an audience followed by a facilitated Critical Response Process

  • All in-person rehearsals will be at the MLK FAME Center, 3201 E. Republican St., Seattle WA 98112

Compensation:

$75.00 per role played

Goals of Development Festival (In Case you were wondering!)

  • to provide time and space for playwrights to hear a work in progress aloud.

  • to practice using the Liz Lerman Critical Response Process as a tool for creating creative agency for playwrights and for offering usable inquiry-based feedback for playwrights.

  • to share unique stories from underheard artists with audience members in Seattle, through in-person participation, and with audience members elsewhere, through Zoom participation.

  • to build connections between playwrights in Seattle and elsewhere with the Seattle theatre community, including directors and actors.


COVID Safety Information:

All cast, crew and staff for in-person productions and activities conducted by The Shattered Glass Project are required to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19, for the safety of all participants. Play #1 - Glitter Bracelets by Nay Harris, directed by Alexandria J. Henderson

Key Dates: 

  • Zoom readthrough: Monday, February 13th starting at or after 1:30 p.m. or Sunday, February 19th, at 12 noon.

  • Workshop Rehearsals: March 6-9, 2023

  • Performance: March 10, 2023, 7 p.m.

Synopsis:

Meet Pixie and Angela; Pixie’s obsessions include hot cocoa, playing with people’s hair and cutting herself. Angela’s obsessions are making lists, finishing school, and swearing she’s fine. They battle mental illness, self-harm and old anxieties as they fight to love and care for one another, but shit hits the fan on their 10-month anniversary. A play that asks if it’s truly possible to help anyone if you spend most of your time/energy ignoring your own pain?

CONTENT INFORMATION:

Themes include self-harm and negative bodily image; and discussions of suicide/suicide ideation. There is a graphic depiction of self-harm and Trichotillomania.

Available Roles

  • Angela Assata Walker: Black lesbian, 22, a bit of a stud. Studying to become a professor (African-American Studies and Sociology). Has long locs and wears glasses, a lot of sweater vests and bowties (because they’re cool). She tries her hardest to not be anxious, but one’s hardest isn’t always enough.

  • Charlene “Pixie” Brown: 20, small (5’1). Femme lesbian, she has a pixie cut, loves long, swishy skirts and glitter. A hair-washer at a salon, she loves playing with people’s hair. Almost child-like with a heavy heart that tries its best to be light. *The actor for Pixie should also play Grace Henderson (Angela’s ex-girlfriend)

  • Gina: Black, 21. Pixie’s best friend since preschool. Hairdresser at the salon Pixie works at. Confident and chill about it. Knows exactly how deep Pixie’s scars run.  *The actor for Gina should also play the Barista

  • RAE: any race, ethnicity. Timeless, gender-nonconforming being who’s poetic and charming when they’re in control. Not completely of this world, but also very much ingrained in humanity. A personification of self-destructive tendencies, they spend most of their time with Pixie since she’s the only one who really notices/can hear them, though RAE can usually be seen in the background somewhere. *The actor for RAE should also play Sharon Lockley (Angela’s best friend)


Play #2 - A Witness by Jordan Elizabeth Henry, directed by Rebecca O’Neil

Key Dates: 

  • Zoom readthrough: tentatively scheduled for February 12, 10 a.m.-12 noon

  • Workshop Rehearsals: March 13-16, 2023

  • Performance: March 17, 2023, 7 p.m.

Synopsis:

As the 6 month anniversary of her brother’s death nears, hospice nurse Billie begins seeing a new patient: Chuck, a woman in the last stages of ALS. Chloe, a recently-sober addict who has returned to town after a year, tries to help Nathan, Kosmo's partner, navigate a spell of major depression as Des, a local artist, demands answers about her relationship with Nathan.

Content Information:

This show is recommended for ages 14 & up and includes adult language, discussions of assisted suicide and Death with Dignity, terminal illness, and alcoholism and drug addiction.

Available Roles:

  • Billie she/her, 30s, any ethnicity - Billie is Autistic/on the autism spectrum and should be played by a neurodiverse actor.

  • Nathan he/him, 30s, any ethnicity - Nathan is Autistic/on the autism spectrum and should be played by a neurodiverse actor.

  • Des she/her, 30s, any ethnicity

  • Chloe she/her, 20s, any ethnicity


Play #3 - Rockhound by Karen Saari, directed by Cindy Geise French

Key Dates: 

  • Zoom readthrough: February 11 or February 19, 10 a.m.-12 noon

  • Workshop Rehearsals: March 20-23, 2023

  • Performance: March 24, 2023, 7 p.m.

Synopsis:

Rain, a lonely widow, has a growing addiction to painkillers and forms a close bond with her kind but unstable nephew Caleb who is fighting his own demons.

CONTENT INFORMATION:

This show is recommended for ages 14 & up and includes adult language, discussions of mental health and neurodiversity, and depictions of drug addiction.

Available Roles:

  • Caleb Peterson: 34-year old mixed race male, born to a white mother. Caleb is Rain’s nephew. He is kind and well-intentioned but has always felt like an outsider. He is dealing with his ADHD and meth addiction alone. He finds comfort in creative expression that no one has ever encouraged.
