Scene Two: Aftermath
Celeste looks out the window of Robin’s office to the street where Evelyn fell. When Robin asks why she hasn’t left, as everyone working was offered the rest of the day off, Celeste confesses that Evelyn landed on her car when she jumped. She asks if there’s any work she can get done. Robin asks her to check the voicemail, which Celeste reluctantly admits she never learned to do. Robin tells her to leave, but just as she does, the ghost of Evelyn appears before her.
Scene Three: Home
Celeste arrives home to find the ghost of Evelyn waiting for her. They try to determine if she’s a hallucination. Celeste worries Robin will fire her because she’s so bad at her job, then realizes perhaps whoever sent Evelyn’s ghost to haunt her is also bad at their job, and instead meant to send the ghost of her recently deceased mother, Theresa,
Scene Four: Back
Four months in the past, Celeste sits with Theresa. Theresa pushes Celeste to reckon with the reality that her cancer is killing her. She makes Celeste promise to try her best to be okay once she is gone.
Scene Five: Negotiation
Back in the present, Celeste tries to figure out how to contact the other side to fix the error. Evelyn thinks the best option would instead be for Celeste to also kill herself, asserting that it would free Evelyn’s spirit. Celeste refuses, excited about the prospect of seeing her mother’s ghost.
Scene Six: Morning
Celeste and Evelyn return to the office building to meet with Robin. Robin tells Celeste she is being let go. In the ensuing argument, Celeste accidentally reveals that she has been seeing the ghost of Evelyn, and blows up at Robin for her cold attitude towards Evelyn’s suicide. Once the two leave, the ghost of Theresa appears to Robin.
Scene Seven: Seance
Celeste sets up a seance to try to contact her mother. Evelyn pranks her by pretending it has worked, then tries to goad her into killing herself.
Scene Eight: Pretending
Robin pretends that she cannot see Theresa’s ghost. Once Theresa realizes that she is at The Bureau of Missing Persons and Unidentified Remains, and that Robin is Celeste’s boss, she asks to see her daughter. Robin refuses, maintaining that Theresa is only a figment of her imagination.
Scene Nine: The Second Attempt
Evelyn tries again to convince Celeste to kill herself, offering to go first by letting Celeste stab her with a kitchen knife. Celeste stabs her, but Evelyn’s ghost remains.
Scene Ten: Still Here
Theresa tries to convince Robin to let her see Celeste. Robin tells Theresa that Celeste was terminated, and Theresa demands that she call her back to the office immediately.
Scene Eleven: Conference
Celeste and Evelyn return to the office, ostensibly to fill out some missing paperwork for Robin. Robin tries to find out more about Celeste’s claim that she sees Evelyn’s ghost. Theresa realizes Evelyn is now haunting Celeste. Evelyn sees that Theresa is now haunting Robin, and demands that Celeste leave. Celeste, who cannot see Theresa, thinks that Robin is making fun of her and storms out of the office.
Scene Twelve: Repeat
We return to the first scene of the play, but are now able to see the ghost of Theresa standing with Evelyn on the balcony. She tries to convince her not to jump, and to go talk to Celeste. Evelyn tells her to be quiet, asserts that Theresa isn’t real and there is no one on the balcony with her, and jumps.
Scene Thirteen: Crackers
Back at Celeste’s apartment, Evelyn accidentally reveals that she’s seen Theresa’s ghost. Celeste demands to know where Theresa is, and the two argue. Celeste is angry that nobody in the office building was there for her when Theresa died, and says she was happy when Evelyn went missing because it meant someone else was hurting as much as she was. Evelyn grabs the container of Theresa’s ashes and dumps them on the floor, which Celeste’s roomba vacuums up.
Scene Fourteen: Apologies
Robin tells Theresa that she believes her work is able to help people, and wishes that it was easier than it is. Theresa comforts her, and the two embrace as Robin cries.
Scene Fifteen: Separation
Celeste decides that she will no longer see or hear Evelyn’s ghost. It works.
Scene Sixteen: Hands
Theresa and Robin connect. Theresa worries that as a ghost she will only appear to people who are thinking of ending things, and the two realize what it must mean for Celeste to be seeing Evelyn. They leave for her apartment.
Scene Seventeen: Embrace
Celeste is hanging a noose, while the now-unseen Evelyn tries to stop her. Robin arrives in time to see what Celeste is doing, and tries to help her see the ghost of Theresa. Celeste can’t, and Robin assures her that everything will be fine. Evelyn worries she is all alone now, but Theresa holds out a hand to her. Celeste confesses to Robin how alone she feels, and Robin offers to be there for her. The roomba nuzzles against Celeste, who picks it up and holds it in an embrace.
The company line dances.
